Host a Event
If you are consider holding an LMHH gig in your student union or local area we have this guide to help you think about what you need to do to prepare. We have compiled a list of 10 things you need to consider in the planning process.
- Get a team of people around you - talk to your LGBT society, friends, family, workmates or others in your union. See who is interested in putting on an LMHH gig and who is willing to help out.
- Organise a planning meeting with all involved and decide who'll be doing which jobs (thinking about all of the tasks in the list below).
- Find a local (LGBT-friendly) venue that’ll let you use the space for free, whether it's your students' union or a tiny cafe.
- Contacts bands/DJs/comedians/acts to perform. It doesn't matter if they're LGBT or not as long as they understand why you're doing the gig and are happy to help. MySpace is very useful for this - as is checking out previous bands that have played at local venues.
- Ask your students' union/association/local trade unions to sponsor the gig with a donation and ask them to publicise it among their members.
- Design a flyer and poster (you can use our design or make your own) to promote the event. Think about using websites like Facebook and Twitter. Maybe your university or college will do an article on your event for their website?
- Contact us at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. and and let us know about your gig so we can help advertise.
- Invite speakers from local trade unions, activist groups, NUS LGBT and/or the UAF national office.
- Contact the local press and invite them to the event, and ask if they will publicise it beforehand. A press release doesn’t have to be difficult, just keep it short and informative.
- Enjoy a great LMHH gig and remember to hand out flyers, and to sell t-shirts and badges. Finally take loads of photos, Videos and write a report for NUS' website to inspire others to do the same!
